A forecast of heavy rain did not stop the crowds from coming to celebrate Valentine’s Day in this city known for its romantic charm. It’s celebrated every year with events all around town, but this year was a bit special. All those in love were invited to assemble at the Piazzale Michelangelo for the official opening of the Piazzale’s new look…..gone is the giant parking lot overlooking one of the most romantic views in the world, replaced by lawns sculpted in the shape of the lily, Florence’s flower. A pedestrian dream come true.
It was a mob scene from the get-go with couples of every age smiling and spreading love all over. The events of the day were carried out with all of Florence as the backdrop.
There was music ….a sweet blend that offered something for everyone (old Italian tunes, tango, disco), a comedian who took to the stage with stories of relationships both good and bad, a staging area where couples could pose within a huge picture frame that featured the Duomo as a backdrop, and even a tiny stage where a group of tango dancers inspired everyone with their sensual moves…..
It never did rain, and when the sun appeared everything took on that wonderful Florentine golden glow. At the end of the tango exhibition, the master of ceremonies gave a countdown and asked everyone to kiss in the name of love! Can you imagine this huge crowd of people all kissing at the same time? For all the headaches and worries that our world faces every day, it’s so comforting to know that romance is still alive and well.
